Start a group
Anyone with a ROK account can apply to run a group. ROK reviews each application before the group goes live.
In the app
- Step 1: Open More, tap Groups & partners, then tap Start a group.
- Step 2: Add your group's name, type and a short public description. A logo (Upload logo) and a location are optional.
- Step 3: Tap Submit application.
On the website
- Step 1: Go to Start a group.
- Step 2: Add your group's name, type and a short public description. A logo and a location are optional.
- Step 3: Click Submit application.
Use Note to the ROK admin (private) for anything that helps ROK approve you, like links or how many people you serve. Your group stays in review until ROK approves it. You'll get a notification when it's approved, and your dashboard opens up. You can have up to three applications waiting at once.
Your organizer dashboard
In the app
- Step 1: Open More and tap Groups & partners.
- Step 2: Tap your group. It's marked Owner.
- Step 3: Tap Manage this group.
On the website
Go to your dashboard, or choose Partner dashboard from your profile menu.
The top shows your member count, how many acts have been logged for the group, and its group points. View public page shows your group the way everyone else sees it.
On the website the dashboard has tabs. In the app the same parts sit on one screen, in sections:
- Activity: acts your members logged for the group, newest first, plus Top contributors, ranked by acts logged for this group.
- Members: requests to approve, open invites and your member list.
- Opportunities: volunteer events you post, with Edit, Close signups, Reopen and Cancel event for each one.
- Custom Acts: kinds of kindness your group counts.
- Leaderboard: your members ranked by their lifetime ROK points. Members who turned off Show me on the leaderboard aren't listed.
- Settings: your logo, name, description, town and how people join.
Tip: At the top of Activity, Set a campaign gives your group a start date, an end date and a goal in acts. Members see its progress on the group page, and after the end date it shows your final results. Use Edit or Clear campaign to change it.
You don't need to join your own group. Acts you post count toward the groups you run.
Members and how people join
In Settings, under How members join, pick one and tap Save changes:
- Request to join: people ask, and you approve each one. Listed in the public Groups directory.
- Open: anyone can join instantly. Listed in the public Groups directory.
- Invite only: only you can add members, by @username. Not listed in the directory.
Invite only keeps your group out of Groups, though its page still opens for anyone with the link. You'll get a notification when someone asks to join or joins.
In Members:
- Pending requests: tap Accept or Decline.
- Invite a member: type someone's @username and tap Invite. They get an invite and join once they accept it.
- Invited: people who haven't answered yet. Cancel invite takes one back.
- Active members: Remove takes someone out of the group. On a long list, use Find a member by name.
Custom acts
Custom acts are the kinds of kindness your group counts, like “Trail Cleanup.” Give each a name and a short description, then add it. You can have up to 20.
Members see your custom acts as choices when they post, as long as Count this toward your groups is on. Members also see them on your group page under Log an act for your group.
Advanced options let you set goal points, start and end dates, and a location. Goal points count toward your group's points only. Members always earn the standard 10 for themselves. A custom act with dates is only offered while it's running.
Logo and group details
In Settings, use Upload (or Replace) under Group logo to add your logo. You can also change the name, description and town. Tap Save changes when you're done.
Good to know: Your group type is locked after approval. To change it, contact ROK at ROK@KindnessWorldwide.org.
To delete a group, go to Settings and use Delete this group under Danger zone. It removes all members, cancels open volunteer events and can't be undone. Members keep their posts and every point they earned.
More than one group
You can run several groups from one account. Apply for each one the same way. When you run more than one, the top of your dashboard shows a button for each group. Pick one to manage it. On the website, Start another group sits next to them.
A parent group can have sub-groups, like a college and its chapters. Only ROK can link a parent and its sub-groups. Email ROK@KindnessWorldwide.org with both groups' names. ROK confirms that the sub-group's organizer agrees before linking them. ROK can also set a parent so members join only one of its sub-groups at a time.
Once they're linked:
- The parent's public page says Parent group and lists its sub-groups, with combined totals that count each act and member once.
- Each sub-group's page links up to the parent with Part of and the parent's name.
- The parent's Activity list includes acts from its sub-groups, each tagged with the sub-group's name. Its contributors and member list stay its own.
- Sub-groups go one level deep. A sub-group can't have sub-groups of its own.
Questions
- Can I run my group from my phone?
- Yes. The app has the same parts as the website: activity and top contributors, members, volunteer opportunities, custom acts, the leaderboard, settings, your QR code, and deleting the group. The website also shows a tier card under the leaderboard.
- Why isn't my group in the Groups directory?
- Only approved groups set to Open or Request to join are listed. Invite-only groups and groups still in review aren't.
